Chapter Thirty-Two

Echo

I WAKE UP early and attempt to call Lynsie. It goes straight to voicemail and I let out a strangled yell in frustration. Not knowing is the absolute worse. I’m not expecting to get to see him. I don’t even know if I want to. What would I even say? I’m sorry my parent’s ripped us apart ten years ago. I’m sorry you were injured. Oh yeah, by the way, you have a son.

Dylan.

How is he going to handle all of this? The fact that the dad he’s never met is now back and is injured?

I’m so conflicted. My heart is screaming loud and clear. It knows that I truly want to see him. It knows that I’m so damn worried about him being hurt that I can barely stand it. My heart knows all the truths I’ve been trying to push away.

I’ve never stopped loving him.

Truth is, I never will. And I really don’t know how to handle that, or what to even do with that information. He’s probably long over me. He had looked more than pissed when we ran into each other a couple months ago. He definitely didn’t look like he missed me or was slightly happy to see me.

The way he responded to my presence hurt me. Deeply. Not that I expected him to fully embrace me and spin me around like they do in the movies. But, hell, a smile would have been nice. Who am I kidding? It’s not like I smiled back or gave him the treatment I wished he had me. I’m equally as guilty.

What we had is probably broken beyond repair. I should probably play it safe for all of our sakes and just head back home.

But I can’t. I can’t keep his son from him, and I can’t fathom keeping Dylan away from his father either. Circumstances are what made it happen in the first place. It was never me doing it intentionally. There’s no way in hell I can purposefully do it now. If anything, I owe them both at least a chance at a relationship. But I swear to God, if he lets my son down I will make sure he’s even more injured beyond repair.
